Mexico is chock full of amazing vacation destinations. There is truly something for everyone from century’s old colonial towns to picture-perfect beaches and everything in between. One region in particular is very special as it offers so many opportunities for an unforgettable trip, I’m talking about the state of Nayarit!

Located just a few hours’ drive west of Guadalajara ,this pacific coastal state has a wealth of places to choose from, so I’m going to highlight a few of them here.

Puerto Vallarta

A popular beach vacation destination for international visitors as well as local Mexicans alike, alluring Puerto Vallarta is surrounded by lush green hills that swoop down to the crystalline waters of the pacific. Enjoy the relaxation of the well-maintained beaches by day and the vibrant restaurant and party scene by night. There is also a very big gay scene here as well so everyone is welcome.

Punta Mita

If a little more privacy is what you’re looking for, then check out Punta Mita. Just 10 miles north of Puerto Vallarta, Punta Mita is a small village which offers high-end accommodation catering to guests who are looking to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and climate without all the crowds. There are plenty of luxury Punta Mita villas and vacation rentals available, but make sure to book early in the winter months as they get reserved quickly when the weather gets cold in Canada and the US.

Sayulita

Located 25 miles north of Puerto Vallarta is a surfer’s paradise name Sayulita. What was once a sleepy fishing village has now become a popular surf retreat for expats during the winter time. There are pretty consistent waves and breaks suitable for all riders from beginners to advanced. The small town has a cool vibe and there are plenty of places to eat and have some ice cold beers after a day on the beach, not to mention some of the best tacos in all of Mexico!

While Cancun might be more publicized than the beach retreats mentioned above, you’ll have a much more authentic experience in Nayarit without sacrificing any of the conveniences you’re looking for on a quality getaway. Puerto Vallarta has plenty of international flights and many national flights within Mexico as well so it’s very accessible.
